Focus Media Sells Stake In Online Ad Subsidiary Allyes To Silver Lake

Three years after paying $225 million to buy online ad company Allyes , Chinese ad firm Focus Media is selling a majority stake in the company, which bills itself as China’s “largest online media service provider,” to PE firm Silver Lake. Silver Lake is paying $124 million to Focus Media ( NSDQ: FMCN ) for a 62 percent stake in Allyes. In a release , Focus Media says that selling the stake will let it concentrate on its core businesses, which include an in-store ad network and movie theater ad network.

Windows/Mac/Linux: Firefox 4 Beta 5 is out tonight , and it firms up a few things that have been slowly taking shape in previous betas of the browser. Most significantly, it enables by default the (Windows-only) hardware acceleration that had been available through a deep settings switch previously. New to the build, however, are a robust audio API (demonstrated at YouTube ), a return to two-column menus, this time with multiple shades, and a new feature, HTTP Strict Transport Security, that allows sites to demand a browser make a secure and encrypted HTTPS connection

Chris Dixon to VCs: Act More Like Startups

Hunch.com co-founder Chris Dixon has some advice for big venture capital firms: think more like, and behave more like, the startups you invest in. In a blog post, the startup CEO listed suggestions for how major VCs might want to approach their business — based on how he would approach it if he was running a big VC firm — including “have fewer meetings” and “have everyone at the firm blog/tweet.” Dixon’s post comes amid an ongoing debate about the benefits and virtues of so-called “super angel” investors and the flaws and weaknesses of traditional VC firms — not to mention the question of whether there is a seed-funding “crash” looming.

Mozilla Labs Vaguely Announces Web-Based Gaming Initiative

Earlier today Mozilla Labs — the R&D arm of the company behind Firefox — announced that it was launching a new Gaming section focused on fostering games built on modern Open Web technologies.
